Greensands Bed and Breakfast is situated on the A417 near to East Hendred. Within a short stroll from Greensands we have built a new annex to provide more accommodation. Local Attractions
Greensands is located on the edge of the village of East Hendred, A picturesque village nestled at the foot of the Berkshire downs and a wonderful gateway through which to explore the Ridgeway and the surrounding open countryside. The village of East Hendred itself has won many awards for it's beauty and is a mix of architecture running back though time with an abundance of thatched cottages and timber framed buildings. It also boasts three public houses who all serve food, a village shop and Post Office along with a church with a faceless clock!

If you want to search a little further afield the following are places worth a visit.
Wantage - This is the nearest town and has a bustling town centre with many of the better known High Street Stores.
Abingdon - The town of Abingdon again has many interesting places to visit and is situated a few miles downstream from Oxford alongside the River Thames.
Didcot Railway Centre - A working railway museum that allows you to wander through various old locomotives from the past with frequent Steam Days when you can actually have a short ride on a steam train - great for kids.
White Horse Hill - An ancient bronze age settlement situated on top of the largest hill in the area with the famous chalk white horse carved on it's Northern side. Fantastic views over the surrounding countryside.
Lambourn Gallops - An early start to the downs near to the famous horse racing village of Lambourn will allow you to watch the training of racehorses on the various gallops to be found on the top of the Ridgeway.
Hendred Vineyard - East Hendred actually has two vineyards and one of them makes their own wines.
Lains Barn - A popular venue for weddings, trade fairs and exhibitions.
Waylands Smithy - An ancient burial barrow near to White Horse Hill.

The Eyston Arms - A beautiful country pub with first class food and beers. Booking advised.
The Wheatsheaf - Yet another quaint country pub renowned for it's food. Very pretty. Not such a large drinking area though but a nice garden.
The Plough - Great value pub with hearty meals and live sports TV.
The Hare - A mile or so towards Wantage. Enormous portions and good pub food. Large bar area and outside area

Weekend Activities at Greensands
Our wonderful location in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside makes Greensands the perfect base from where to explore the surrounding countryside be it by car, on foot or by bike. Oxford, the City of Dreaming Spires is only 14 miles to the North whilst to the South you will find the Berkshire Downs with nothing but miles and miles of open countryside. Those who explore this area can expect to see some of our wonderful natural wildlife which includes all species of deer and the fabulous bird of prey the Red Kite which habitates this and very few other areas of this country. Wedding Parties
Whilst we do not offer wedding facilities at Greensands we can offer those attending weddings nearby a convenient place to stay that is within easy reach of some of the more popular local wedding venues such as Lain's Barn. For large groups we can also offer special rates. Just contact us for a quotation. Remember we are only 20 minutes from Oxford and the towns of Didcot and Wantage are less than 10 minutes drive. Local taxi services will also pick up and collect for those towns.Ramblers and Walkers
The East Hendred area is easy to explore with footpaths literally across the road form our building that you will allow you to walk for for many miles as you can manage in virtually any direction without seeing a motorised vehicle! Packed lunches can be available with prior notice as can a hearty end of the day evening meal should you decide to avail yourself of the fine local hostelries (Three!) To be found in the village. Mountain Bikers
Being situated at the foot of the Berkshire Downs and within easy reach of the Ridgeway make Greensands the ideal base for a biking weekend. Mountain bikers are always welcome and in addition to offering you a hearty cooked breakfast we also have lock up facilities for your biking equipment along with the nearly always needed jetwash to remove that mud after a hard days exploring. With sufficient notice we can accommodate parties of up to 20 bikers by using both of our accommodation venues which are only 100 metres from each other.
